I was driving to work today and the Walton and Johnson morning show started talking about "revenue streams" that Mel Gibson was raking in off of the movie, "The Passion of the Christ". (They also mentioned that Tom Cruise is going to be in War of the Worlds, produced by Spielberg, and rather than taking a lump sum is taking 10%, which could be up to $350 million, they were saying).
Back to revenue streams. There's something about that phrase that is exciting, gives a warm fuzzy... Set up something and sit back and watch the money roll in. That's the way to do it... "money for nuthin".
Of course, there's the hard part of setting up something. First, it's best to do something you like doing anyway, because 1] you will do a better job and 2] if it doesn't pan out, at least you had fun doing it.
Given that I am a computer guy, focused on UNIX and web stuff, my best bet is to create some web services and charge for usage. "Charge for usage???," you cry.... Well, yeah, I agree, most people like to find cool stuff on the web for free, and if it costs something, they just move on. The trick is to find a niche with no apparent substitutes, and something that will DEFINITELY help someone do what they want to do. For this to be profitable long-term, this means you need to help businesses. Now the only thing to do is find the right sort of project to implement and "sell" to get clients.
I'm working on my first one now. It's mostly done, but I've stalled. I need to get back in the mode of working on it, and get it out there. With the $30 a month web hosting I found, this should be a low start-up cost project... one client will foot the bill! ($29.95/month is my anticipated fee).
Revenue streams.... Mmmmmmmmmm. Tastes better than a jelly donut.

About a year ago I was sitting on the couch one weekend watching TV, and I was thinking that it was such a waste of time and unproductive. Sure, I could go into work and make some money (I am a paid by the hour contractor), but that would burn me out of that job quickly. What to do?
